FAQS

Here are answers to some common questions.
  • About Layout Services

CARE Typography seeks to meet the stated needs of its clients in laying out newsletters, brochures or whatever printing requirements we are given. Because this is an online service, rather than a walk-in typesetting and print shop, we will need to communicate as detailed as possible through emails and perhaps phone calls. We will always send a mock-up of the layout before the final product is sent and billed.

We do no in-house printing, except for very small jobs. We will work with your printer for the final finished product.

We do most of our layout work using Adobe products. We can provide files in PDF formatting as well. We do not use Publisher or any other software layout program.

Turn around time varies depending on the difficulty of the layout and design. Two to three days is normal turn around time for us. We can do expedited jobs for additional cost and what our current work load is.

For large or more difficult layout work, we require payment of one-half of the quote upfront. This is especially the case for extensive book work.

CARE Typography is not responsible for copyrighted materials. If you use copyrighted materials in your project, whether it be text or photos or logos, you are completely responsible for the legality of their use.

  • About Font Design Services

Font and type design are specialty services. They are time consuming and require hours of careful labor and graphic awareness. We will give the client a quote on the perceived work and require a downpayment of one-half of the cost upfront. There are strict copyright rules to be observed in designing a font or a typeface. We observe all these protocols. We can send you the specs and requirements, if requested.

  • About Graphic Design Services

CARE Typography has no in-house professional graphic designer. If your project requires graphic design, you will need to find a designer. We can do smaller design projects that require minimal graphics work. Our design and font libraries provide many graphics already completed and available for use. We can and will suggest some of those designs for your project, if necessary.

  • About Book Typesetting

We are not book publishers. However, we have produced books from text given to us with the advice and layout setting of Lulu Press and Blurb and other online press companies. We would use their layout specs and designs for any proposed book. We invite you to visit their sites at lulu.com and blurb.com if you are thinking of producing a book.

  • About Web Design Services

We produce web sites using WYSIWYG design software programming from Adobe called Muse and WithoutCode. We usually use templates from these services. We have found these tools very satisfactory and extensive for many web designs. We are not web coders and do not use those kinds of specialty tools for web design.

We can direct you to a number of great templates  with which we can work and develop your special site. This site was produced from WithoutCode. See app.wocode.com for more information.

You would be required to assume the costs of hosting services for your site, or we can publish your site to another server provider.

Website design is usually costly and requires hours of intensive labor. Again, we would provide a quote upfront, along with a contract for you to sign, and one-half of the cost provided upfront before any work is begun.

Again, CARE Typography is not responsible for copyrighted materials used in web development. All photos, JPEGs, borrowed text and so forth are the legal responsibility of the client.

  • About PageMaker to InDesign

CARE Typography can convert your older PageMaker files (from Version 4 through 6.5 or 7) to InDesign files, which can be read with the InDesign app from Creative Cloud Services by Adobe. This is a pay-per-file service, accessed through our "Store." Note the information below.

    How is the conversion done?

CARE Typography uses a number of Macs along with Windows software to open up your PageMaker files and then convert them to appropriate InDesign files.

Will the conversions retain my original fonts?

CARE Typography will use its extensive library of fonts to duplicate most of the fonts used in your PageMaker documents. If we cannot match the font, we will notify you and suggest an alternate font which looks close to the font you have submitted.

    What about images and layout?

The conversion does not include reformatting or readjusting the layout. If this is desired we will contact you with a quote as to the cost and layout options. We strongly recommend you put placeholders in your layout if the images are complex. As with any conversion service, it is your responsibility to check through the converted file and approve its content. It is your responsibility to check that all elements in the converted file are correctly set up and output correctly. Full proofing of the converted document is recommended, and CARE Typography/Carl Shank Consulting accepts no responsibility for any errors, omissions or financial loss resulting from using our service. As with any highly complex conversion, occasionally there may be elements that do not convert correctly and all parts must be checked by you, the customer, before use. The conversion service is offered in good faith but the final responsibility for using the converted files lies with you, the customer.

    Is the conversion legal?

CARE Typography uses only purchased software with valid serial numbers registered with Adobe and other companies for the conversions. This is not pirated or software copied from other providers.

    What about the store?

We use an online store, Ecwid (www.ecwid.com) for all transactions. Ecwid is a PCI DSS validated Level 1 Service Provider, the gold standard for e-commerce solutions worldwide.

What is the turnaround time for a file conversion?

Once we have received your payment and your file(s), we can usually process all requests within two to three business days or even much sooner, depending on the submitted file(s).

Can you back format an InDesign file to open up in an earlier InDesign version?

Yes. If you need a file available for an earlier version of InDesign we can now convert any InDesign file (INDD) so they can be opened up in InDesign CS4 and above. We do this by creating an InDesign (IDML) file from any version of InDesign. This is useful if you don't have the latest version of InDesign (InDesign CC), but have files created in a later version.

How do we use your information?

By using this service you agree that we may contact you in the future regarding news and offers. We will never share your details with any third party company.
